Prince Mirsky's good old book has in fact not been excelled by any other work concerning Russian literature from its beginnings to 1900. It is packed with information, and still very comprehensive and intriguing indeed in its analyses and anecdotes.

It also provides some entertaining lingual gems - the writer Derzhavin's prose, for example, is by Mirsky characterised as 'virile', and his philosophy as 'manfully thankful for the joys of ephemeral life', while the influent literary criticist Belinsky's style is condemned as 'execrable lingo'.

Anyone interested in Russian literature should read this book. As a reference book it serves excellently.

A compilation of Mirsky's "A History of Russian Literature from the Earliest Times to the Death of Dostoyevsky" combined with the first two chapters of his "Contemporary Russian Literature, 1881-1925." Mirsky was, indeed, a contemporary historian of some of the greatest writers of fiction. Tolstoy, Doestoyevsky, Gogol, Chekhov and Turgenev are explored within the historical and physical framework in which they lived.

This books is a classic exploration of Russian Literature that has had a great deal of impact on the teaching and understanding of Russian Literature. For example, the leading translators of Russian Literature, Pevear and Volokhonsky, make use of Mirsky's history. Their translation of Chekhov stories even recommends Mirsky's section on Checkhov. Their recommendation is, of course, of much greater import than mine.

Mirsky created a classic historical work of literature. It is one of the guides you need to understand some of the greatest literature of all time.

This book, despite its repetitive style, is simply the best in-depth analysis of the evolution of the Soviet Army in WWII, at least in English. It is therefore, despite its rather high price, essential reading for anyone interested in the Eastern Front. It is also complemented by Steve Zaloga's "Red Army Handbook", with its invaluable TO&Es which document graphically the evolution analysed in this book.

This book is an important piece of scholarship which is based on Russian and German primary sources. It seeks to look at the Red Army and why it was able to defeat the Germans. Conventional histories have relied on the myth that Germany, a smaller country than the Soviet Union was in the end overwhelmed by hoards of poorly armed Soviet troops dying as they attacked the superbly trained but numerically weaker German Army.

Dunn shows that the victory of the forces of the Soviet Union was something that was unexpected. In 1942 Germany not only controlled all of Europe but also 60 million Soviet citizens. The Germans had a far greater pool of labor and industry to draw on. Rather than the Soviets having vast reserves of manpower by 1943 they had to reduce the size of infantry regiments as they ran out of troops. They key to Soviet success was not the numbers of men but the increase in the number of tanks and other equipment in Soviet formations which were used as a substitute for men. This was made possible by the Soviet command economy that was able to divert almost all production to the war effort. This contrasted to Germany and its allies who squandered its resources up till 1944 by which time it was to late.

Dunn's work like his well researched "Kursk Hitlers Gamble" is a vital book for anyone wanting to understand the true nature of the second world war and why Germany lost. A must read.

A great book for everyone. It is one of the few books that would satisfy both the serious historians with the detailed accounts and the casual readers with the plethora of human drama. It describes the journey and battles of the Spanish Blue Division, made of volunteers from Spain to fight Soviet Russia. By recounting the events in one sector on the Leningrad front, the book gives the readers a feeling of the enormity of the Eastern Front. A must-read for anyone interested in World War II history.

This book, first published seventy years ago, is a harrowing account of the author's escape from the Soviet Cheka shortly after the Russian Revolution. He was the leader of a group of rebels in Turkestan, and as such was a much sought after prize for the Bolsheviks, who wanted to eliminate him and all other opponents of their regime. The story is told in such a low-key way, however, that often it becomes a mere travelogue rather than a tale of action. For all of that, the underlying terror comes through, and the danger and hardship which the author faced appears very real to the reader. In addition to the main story, this book is also full of geography, geology, zoology, botany and history. The author was certainly a well-rounded individual, in addition to being very, very brave. We don't see many heroes such as this man in our times, and it's rewarding to read that such people were more than wiling to risk everything to combat tyranny.

I can't express how exquisitely these 4 volumes are packaged. Take a look at the price!!! There is a large case that contains four slender volumes bound in what appears to be handmade paper. Each volume focuses on one of four palaces. Each one contains watercolours with a description paragraph to the left. The watercolours are breathtakingly reproduced -- bright colors, intricate details. Treat yourself to these four, perhaps the most beautiful book ever produce on the subject of Imperial Russia. Go ahead and splurge!

These four volumes are a wonfderful collectionof watercolours and grisailles from the times of Imperial Russia. They would be suitable for anyone with an interestin art, architecture, Russia and St Petersburg. They show the four palaces (sadly there is no volume for other palaces such as Ropsha, Strelna or Oranienbaum) as they were before they were destroyed by the Germans in WWII. The palaces (both interiors and exteriors) as well as their gardens are brought to life by this wonderful collection. They are shown as they exisited throughout the 19th century and are interesting not only for their artistic and architectual merits but also for their intrinsic historic and cultural value. Very strongle recommended.

Bruce Grant's work is well-researched and extremely well-organized. It is easy to read and interspersed with anecdotes about his travels on Sakhalin island. The book includes some excellent photography. Grant's main thesis centers around the idea that the Nivkhi tribe of Sakhalin island experienced the Soviet era as a "roller coaster" of policy shifts culminating in a sense of "culturelessness." The book covers pre-Revolutionary times a little bit, and then documents the treatment of Nivkhi throughout the Soviet era. A recommended read for anyone studying Siberia during Stalinism or Soviet times.

Grant's book is in the vanguard of his field of siberian studies and post soviet studies. Anyone who wants to understand sovietization and de-sovietization of culture - a much more important topic than this might seem to be - MUST read this book. Grant's analysis is right and beautiful.

Great book. In a small volume - lots of information and insightful analysis. One of the most interesting themes - development of Jewish political thought, and development of the Zionist idea. And a personal note. I am a Jew from Odessa myself. Reading the book brought me back to my beautiful city, and I couldn't help but recognized many familiar characters, and thought about my family origins. Thank you, Steven!

Easy to read and well-researched, this is an excellent book to add to your layperson's repertoire on Ukrainian/Russian Jewish history. I learned a lot about how Jewish people lived, what they did, what they thought about... and how political events shaped their lives.
